Life

In the spring of 2020 it is nearly impossible to escape the wave of bad news spreading as fast as the coronavirus that is responsible for it. Every day seems to bring a never ending barrage of shortages, isolation and even death.

This post is not about all of that though. This post is about life. As I walk around the farm this spring I am constantly reminded of the life that is pushing its way to the forefront, finally shaking off the grip that winter held on it for so long.

The grass seemed to have greened up overnight. Daffodils appeared in the neighbors' ditch. Trees are budding out and the willows in our creek bottom have leafed out already. Saren and I heard frogs joining in a chorus in a wetland on the corner of the farm. All of these things happen every spring, and every spring I am awed at how quickly they occur.

We have two goats expecting kids in a week or so. Neither have given birth before and I can only imagine what they are thinking as this life stirs inside them. One of our hens has gone broody. She stubbornly sits on her clutch of eggs, unwilling to leave them if even to get a drink or a bite of food. It is really admirable to see the devotion she has to these eggs that will hatch little chicks in a couple of weeks.

The goats and the chickens haven't read birthing books and they have not attended any classes. I think, however, they have an innate sense of the rhythm of life.

Nature ebbs and flows with the seasons and life continues on and this gives me hope in the news of the day.
